I like it Bruce! My only concern is that it might be insulting to some people. You know how uptight some can be these days. Thanks for reading:)

I so completely agree with you Charene. My own family business, Schreibman Jewelers fell prey to this very thing. I started playing with technology in the early 90's and spent over a decade trying to convince my aging parents to take the leap. My mother was open, but my father wouldn't hear of it. Hence the sad result:( I am convinced that we would have taken our brand which was already exceptionally successful and been able to compete powerfully.

Many companies, including my former B2B & B2C employer, see Customer Services as an after thought and under-fund it, resulting in low-quality and un/under-trained staff. It is not included in it's Strategic Planning process and treated as back-office, 2nd tier "support" for Sales. Management often looks at C.S. as being of the same type and value as secretarial and data entry services and ignore the fact that it is vital to connecting potential customers with the company and sales staff, as well as assuring Customer Satisfaction and Customer Retention. Typically it is CS that customers see as the true "Face" of a company, that reveals its true nature and value in the business relationship. No matter how fabulous your product/engineering are and how sharp and aggressive your sales department, if the customer's day-to-day interactions with your company are not pleasant, efficient and result in quick, accurate responses you Will lose them - often to otherwise inferior competitors and products. My own experiences proved this to be true many, many times.

I am a media buyer specializing in print. I work with a lot of small business owners that advertise nationally or regionally. You hit the nail on the head with your post. It is not good enough to have a good ad and plan to run one or two times and "see what happens." A successful ad campaign should be budgeted and tracked well. Most small business owners are tight on funds when they launch their business and they often feel like they cannot afford to advertise regularly. It is that very lack of commitment in regular advertising that in the end causes their business to fail.

Good article!
